5th / 6th Grade
For the summer of 2020, The Prairie School’s Center for Developing Excellence’s STEAM Academy will offer 5th and 6th grade students unique opportunities to improve their Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math skills. Returning this summer is our very popular forensics unit “Mysterious Illness” where students will incorporate state-of-the-art technology to determine what is causing the inhabitants of a small town to become very ill. Students will also plan and carry out a space exploration mission to a “Strange New Planet.” During this unit, students will use a planetary rover they design and program to collect and analyze samples from the planet’s surface. Rounding off the week, students will assume the role of an archeological team where they will travel to North Beach to excavate and examine a new culture. We are also planning a very special field trip this coming summer for our 5th and 6th grade students. Follow our Facebook page (@TPSCDE) for upcoming details. As with all STEAM Academies, students will develop team building/problem solving skills and make many new friends during the course of the week. Register begins January 13th, slots fill up fast, and there are a limited number of openings. For those who attended last year as 5th graders, this is a completely NEW SERIES of labs and activities!  Enrollment deadline is May 15, 2020. This summer, during a unique problem-solving/team building activity, students will simulate being marooned on a strange island where they will encounter a variety of difficult and fun challenges that their team must overcome. Students will also take a “trip” to the planet Mars where they will come in contact with several small creatures that they must calculate how to return to Earth using a multitude of complex variables. To round off the week, students will use their scientific skills to solve complex problems in the Racine Downtown area during a unit called “The Amazing Race.” As with all STEAM Academies, students will develop team building/problem solving skills and make many new friends during the course of the week.
